3 fundamentals of CrossFit

CrossFit is a method, a blueprint, to improve your fitness. There are a handful of cornerstone fundamentals that make CrossFit unique. Here are a couple of those critical components of what makes CrossFit unique!

1. CrossFit has a definition for the word FITNESS

What does it mean to be fit? And what do you mean when you want to get in better shape? Fitness, historically, is a very subjective term. Patrick Mahomes is fit. And so is an Olympic gymnast. And so is a bodybuilder. The term fitness, in those examples, is sport-specific. But that's not what you or I mean when we want to get more fit, or "get in better shape."

We're looking for a broad, general, and inclusive fitness. CrossFit from the beginning has been clear about that, and we've been delivering exactly those results from day one!

2. CrossFit is universally scalable

That means that anyone can do it. Young, old, fit, out of shape, and everyone in between.

A common misconception is that CrossFit is a fitness program for people that are already in shape. And that is far from true. CrossFit helps anyone get fit. We use exercise modifications and customizations to adjust (scale) every workout according to each person's physical needs

CrossFit is a high-intensity program, but we are not focused solely on moving faster, farther, or heavier at all costs. Instead, we emphasize technique, the importance of proper mechanics, and consistency and proficiency of movement before increasing intensity. We also ensure intensity is relative to the physiological and psychological tolerances of the individual and that no matter who walks into the gym, they will do CrossFit. This means there is an intended stimulus for each movement in a workout. If an athlete is unable to perform a specific movement, the coach will not offer a random substitution. Instead, the coach will offer a scaled option that preserves the intended stimulus and is accessible to the athlete. In this way, CrossFit is accessible to anyone who wants to do it. This is what makes CrossFit infinitely scalable.

3. CrossFit is your hedge against sickness

The role of exercise and nutrition in preventing sickness and improving health is undeniable. At any point in your life, your health exists on a continuum that spans from sickness to wellness to fitness.

The sickness-wellness-fitness continuum vividly demonstrates the critical role of fitness in promoting health. On the left side of this continuum lies sickness, marked by the presence of one or more chronic diseases. In the center, we find wellness, where disease is absent and health markers are within normal ranges. At the far right, we have fitness, or super-wellness, characterized by the absence of disease and optimal health markers. Achieving super-wellness means you have a protective buffer against sickness. This physiological headroom means your health would need to decline significantly before reaching wellness, or normal, and even further before reaching sickness. Conversely, individuals with health markers centered around wellness have less room for decline before they reach the state of sickness.
